Maiden Castle
One of Britains biggest Hillforts. Think of the effort it took to create this a few hundred years BC. The Romans attacked it and overcome the defenders with their superior weapnry.
Lawrence Weston TEST POST
A small suburb but packs a punch as far as things of interest is concerned. From a folly Castle mentioned by Jane Austin in her book Northhanger Abbey, to several Roman sites to large houses to a secluded Hamlet. Further on down you can see a Roman Dock the Romans used to bring and take goods to Wales. There is also Roman remains of a customs house nearby.

A trip to the past. Visits a Roman Ampithertre and other Roman remains.
Magical History Tour
This is about a 25 mile ride. There's plenty to see such as Chew Valley Lakes, a 50's creation to supply water to Bristol. Next we see a Railway viaduct in Pensford where Acker Bilk lived. This is best seen from the pub beer garden. We travel on throught Belluton where John Locke once lived onto Stanton Drew passing the toll house called The Round House, there's nothing round about it though. A few hundred yards down the road across the old medieval bridge we arrive at the Druids arms. In the garden there is an ancient monument called The Cove - these stones were erected about 4000 years ago. In the fields behind there is about 3 or 4 stone circles. From the pub you can easily walk round to the field entrance. Payment is by honesty box. Leaving Stanton Drew we next travel through Norton Malereward where you should be able to see on the hill Wansdyke. This is believed to be the Western end of Wansdyke, the greatest Earthwork in Britain, and probable the least known. Further up the road we will cut throught the coarse of Wansdyke.
